Executive Overview

The British subwoofer specialist REL Acoustics has been building audiophile-approved subs since 1990. One key feature of every REL sub has been the use of a “High Level connection,” which derives its input signal from the final output stage of the system’s main amplifier. Instead of receiving a line-level signal of low frequencies from a receiver’s (or surround processor’s) preamp section, REL subs are designed to accept the same full-range, high-current signal that the power amplifiers send to the main speakers. According to REL, this arrangement (which allows the main speakers to run full-range) helps REL subs blend in with the main speakers and achieve a more natural, seamless sound on two-channel music. A separate line-level input handles the “.1” low-frequency effects (LFE) channel for surround-sound material, but the company has made it clear in the past that this connection scheme was not the preferred way to use a REL sub.Editorial Note about Line Level Subwoofer Connections:

Connecting a subwoofer speaker level does NOT put additional strain on your AV receiver amplifier since it's a high impedance connection and doesn't draw significant power like a passive loudspeaker would.</blockquote>Now, for the first time, REL has introduced a line of subs that fully embrace the LFE channel in all its glory. The new Serie HT (short for Home Theater) subwoofers abandon the High Level connection and shift focus from music playback to high-octane home theater power.

I bought this model REL HT1205 in Sept 2018 from Eighteen 77 at The Adelphi at $1400 during their promotion period and it comes with a free 3m YBR Sub Woofer Second Note cable. Have it connected to my Marantz 7012 AV in my HDB's spare room c/w with Oppo 205. My preference is mostly music on Cds. Have tried movies too. I found the HT1205 for movies very good. Very basic instructions and easy to  set up the crossover, etc.

I have a very old Model REL Strata (20yrs +) which I am currently using for movies in my Living area. Probably will have it replaced with a newer REL Model should it failed me by than.

Yeah, bought the 12" too cos of the price & reputation of REL. Will try to integrate with a soundbar & Oppo. On their website, it says 10&12" are meant to be sold competitively while the 15" is just a statement pc.

Settings are dead simple, crossover dial has a LFE setting for lazy people like me haha,

Will definitely go down to have a listen when the 15" Predator arrives :)

I keep scratching my head... If this new range of subwoofers are named as HT series...

Then the earlier ones were actually cater to music more?

REL has been known as the musical sub first. Long before subs were used in HT, they built subs to supplement smaller speakers to add more depth and bass.

Their Q100 sold well, especially in UK..

Hi Audioworld

For 2 channel audio stick to the usual like of RELs the T/S or even the mighty G series depending on the budget, your ancillary equipment and room size. Also go for stereo subs. I have a long experience with tell and been using them for coming 6-7 years. Currently I have the REL G2, S510, T5i and yes the HT1205 in a modified REL 3D setup. The HT1205 is positioned as the back sub and used only for movies. Music it's off.

Let me know if you have other questions.
